Press Release Structure and Format





The purpose of a press release is to make an important announcement in the most objective way possible for something that is newsworthy. The point of the press release is to get coverage and to get noticed by your target audience. It is important to send it to a news station that would be interested in this piece, and their information relates to the content.

Format of Press Release:

1.     1. “Press Release” or “News Release” should be written in the top left-hand corner of the page

2.      2. Then indicate when the information is available for publication. The term “immediate release” can be used for information that is ready to publish right away

3.      3. Put the press release date below that

4.     4.  Always include contact information, preferably in the top right-hand corner

5.      5. Make sure to include headline or even a sub headline as well

6.      6. Use the inverted pyramid to organize information(Most important information at the top)

7.    7.  Include two quotes

8.    8.  The boilerplate is at the end of the document

9.   9.   Put three pound signs or “-30-“ at the bottom to indicate the end.

Other Important Information to Remember:

1.    1. The press release should be as concise as possible (Ideally under a page)

2.   2.  The boilerplate provides information about a company or organization, can be compared to an “about us” section

3.   3.  It is important to start with basic questions like when, where, and who did what
