Printing and Print Materials

4-Color / Process Color- Printing that utilizes four colors, these are known together as CMYK, or cyan, magenta, yellow, and black.



Pantone / Spot Colors- They are solid colors that are created using premixed ink, they are typically based on a Pantone Matching System. These are colors that are standardized, and they each have an individual number and name.

Bleed- This is the part on the side of a document that gives a printer a small amount of extra design and space to account for movement of the paper and error when printing.

 



Trim- This is where a blade is set to cut the paper, vinyl, or other material.

Hard Proof- This is referred to as a physical proof or copy, it is tangible.

Soft Proof- This is the ability to view an accurate version of a file on a monitor before it is printed.

Inkjet printing- A type of computer printing that recreates a digital image by forcing droplets of ink onto paper and plastic substrates.

Web Press- Where a roll of paper is continuously feeding into a press without being cut, until the printing process is complete.

Letterpress- A process where many copies of an image are produced by repeated direct impression of inked letters that are pressed into paper.

Substrate- A base material that an image is printed onto. A vase material could be plastic film, glass, paper, or other textile products.
