Design Vocabulary

 


DPI-This is the number of dots per inch, these pixels make up digital images. It describes the resolution of an image.

Image Resolution- The level of detail that an image holds, or relates to how many pixels there are in an image.

Pixel- A small dot or square that makes up the image on a computer screen.

PPI- This refers to the number of pixels that are contained within each inch of a digital image. “Pixels per inch.”

Raster Images- A type of digital image that uses small rectangular pixels formed in a grid pattern to represent an image. It allows for a large range of color.

Vector Images- This is an image that uses mathematical formulas to represent an image, rather than a grid of pixels.

Above the Fold- A part of a web page that is shown before scrolling.

Branding / Brand Identity- Visible elements of a brand, this can include color, design, and logo. That helps distinguish the brand in the consumers’ mind.

Style Guide- A set of standards that are provided from an organization, explaining things such as standards for writing, formatting, and publication. Style Guide Example

Logo- A symbol or design that a company or person uses to identify them or their products.

Lorem ipsum- A placeholder that is used for text, that allows a person to preview a document without having to write their own content.

Trapped White Space- White space that is boxed in by other design elements, typically disrupts the viewer’s focus.

White Space- Any blank or empty space that surrounds other elements in a composition.

En vs. Em Dash- The en dash is a mid-sized dash in between the size of an em dash and a hyphen. En dashes are half the width of an em dash, and the size of an N that is uppercase.
